Selecting Agricultural Loader Hydraulic Cylinders: Single-Acting vs Double-Acting Components

The Engineering Behind Loader Lifting Power

Yard loaders (Hoflader) use high-pressure hydraulic cylinders to raise the boom and tilt attachments. For agricultural operators, understanding the difference between single-acting and double-acting cylinders is key to selecting the right attachments.

Hydraulic Cylinder Configurations:

  • Single-Acting Cylinders: Rely on gravity or structural weight to retract the cylinder piston. Commonly used on simple lifting booms.
  • Double-Acting Cylinders: Hydraulic fluid pressure is applied to both sides of the piston, providing active power in both extension and retraction. Essential for attachments like crocodile claws, log grabs, and 4-in-1 buckets.
  • Hydraulic Quick Couplers: Allow operators to change hydraulic lines and attachments without oil leakage or air entry into the hydraulic circuit.
